Dear Students of Khen Rinpoche,

Yesterday, at Sera Mey Monastery, Yangsi Rinpoche Tenzin Namdrol, the reincarnation of beloved Lama Khen Rinpoche Lobsang Tharchin met with His Holiness the Dalai Lama for the hair-cutting ceremony to become a new bhikshu (monk). Please see the attached link for photos of this most auspicious event. This morning Geshe Lothar and Jampa called from India to relate the details of this event. His Holiness gave advice to Geshe Lothar that the young Rinpoche, born January 12, 2008, should come to Sera Mey at age 5 and begin his studies at age 6. According to Geshe Lothar and Jampa, the young Rinpoche likes playing with his puppy, eating momos and apples and making jokes from time to time. More information will be sent soon.

Dear students of Sera Mey Khensur Lobsang Tharchin Rinpoche:

The following is a brief description of the manner in which the reincarnation of our precious teacher, Khensur Rinpoche, was discovered.

About three years after the passing of holy Khensur Rinpoche, when I was visiting the United States, many of his students approached me with questions about how to go about finding his reincarnation. At that time, there was also some speculation that several young children in the United States might be his reincarnation. I explained what I knew about reincarnations, including past accounts of the discovery of different Lamas and some of the general instructions that are known about the process. Nevertheless, a number of individuals continued to express a variety of personal views.

Dear Dharma friends,
As most of you will recall, in past years it was a custom to celebrate Khen Rinpoche’s birthday every summer in the beginning of July. At that time, we would recite a short version of the Sixteen Arhats’ Puja, followed by a birthday celebration. The ritual has a special connection with Sera Monastery and it is typically performed to promote both the longevity of one’s Lamas and the flourishing of the Holy Dharma.
